Our SAP consultants were asked to deliver a BI solution for United Utilities which would:
- work across thousands of capital projects
- immediately satisfy the complex needs of the projects’ controllers & managers
- take only a few months to complete
- implement near-real-time reporting
- showcase SAP Data Services as a mechanism for processing non-SAP data.
The business context
United Utilities had implemented SAP Project Systems and Investment Management to improve the management of, and reporting on, thousands of capital delivery projects. Their on-going project spend exceeds £3 billion in the current AMP (5-year period). Accurate and timely reporting is therefore critical to the success of thousands of projects and, ultimately, the business itself.
Buchan Hill’s approach
United Utilities’ project managers had a long wish-list of BI reports, but little appreciation of the complexity or timescales involved in delivering successful BI solutions. We helped the key users to prioritise a set of must-have reports and dashboards which would be essential at go-live, with the remaining reports scheduled for a second phase.
We then designed and delivered a BW data model which satisfied the go-live reporting requirements while also, critically, being flexible and scalable enough to incorporate future developments. We used SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence and Dashboards to deliver all of the reporting, consuming data from SAP Business Warehouse.

- We built a high-quality bespoke solution which satisfied United Utilities’ precise reporting demands in terms of accuracy of data and timeliness of reports
- We also introduced a set of design & development standards which United Utilities will use as a benchmark for future BI projects
- We provided extensive SAP Business Warehouse training to United Utilities employees
- We also provided expert advice to other United Utilities BI projects, helping to resolve outstanding support issues.

About United Utilities
United Utilities holds a licence to provide water and sewage services to around seven million people in North West England.
These services are carefully regulated – with the water regulator, Ofwat, reviewing price limits every five years. Between 2010-2015 United Utilities will be investing more than £3 billion to improve the water and wastewater infrastructure and the environment across the North West.
